It can also be tricky to communicate with someone who struggles with mental illness because we feel like we don\u2019t understand what they\u2019re going through. We\u2019d love to share a few tips on how to speak to someone who is struggling with mental illness, but first, we want to make sure you actually understand what mental illness is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a0e985 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6a0e985\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So, What are Mental Illnesses? <\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7306a8ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7306a8ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/what-is-mental-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychiatric Association<\/a>\u00a0says mental illness is:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking or behavior (or a combination of these).<\/li><li>Mental illnesses are associated with distress and\/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.<\/li><li>Mental illnesses are common.<\/li><li>Mental illness is treatable. The vast majority of individuals with mental illness continue to function in their daily lives.<\/li><\/ul><p>Now that we\u2019ve established what mental illness is, let\u2019s talk about how to communicate with someone struggling with mental illness.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cc47c23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7cc47c23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Practice Empathy<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78b81746 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"78b81746\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Empathy is the ability to relate to others. Although you may not experience mental illness, there are probably times you\u2019ve felt uncomfortable, distressed, or not like yourself in your life. These are common feelings someone with mental illness experiences as well. When speaking to someone with a mental illness try to put yourself in their shoes.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4be17a4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4be17a4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Communicate<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33a36b51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"33a36b51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Mental illness can be a lifelong battle and sometimes unpredictable. If someone in your life is struggling one of the best things you can do is check in on them. A simple text or phone call can go a long way. People struggling often feel like they\u2019re alone. It\u2019s important to let them know they\u2019re not. By asking questions like \u201chow are you feeling?\u201d you help normalize mental illness and open up the line of communication.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1dfd261a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1dfd261a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Don\u2019t Stigmatize<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e2d952b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5e2d952b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Mental illnesses have a stigma on them that they make people \u201ccrazy\u201d or \u201cinsane\u201d etc. Mental illnesses are just like every other disease, e.g. diabetes, heart disease, so they should be treated like one. Do not put judgment on your loved one, because that can contribute to negative effects on their health. It\u2019s also helpful to remove \u201ccrazy\u201d from your vernacular. If someone is telling you something shocking, you can say \u201coh wow\u201d instead of \u201cthat\u2019s crazy\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f309233 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f309233\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Advocate and Educate<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5fe979 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f5fe979\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Advocate for your loved ones! Be their biggest supporter. If you\u2019re involved in a conversation that speaks poorly about mental illness, be the one to change the narrative. If you hear someone say \u201cshe\u2019s just being crazy\u201d, try to correct them and get them to use a different word. Educating others around you helps make the world a safe space.
