Most of us are familiar with the concept of IQ (intelligence quotient).\u00a0 After all, society tells us that a high IQ makes us more likely to excel in our careers and earn more money.\u00a0 While intellectual ability does play a role in our success, it\u2019s only part of the equation.\u00a0 \u00a0Emotional intelligence also referred to as \u201cemotional IQ\u201d or \u201cEQ\u201d, is probably more important than intellect when it comes to overall success.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What Is Emotional IQ?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Emotional intelligence is your ability to \u201cread people\u201d and understand what motivates them.\u00a0 Being able to empathize and collaborate with others is part of EQ, too.\u00a0 While there is no formal test to measure emotional IQ, knowing the skills it encompasses can help you gauge how mature you are in this area.\u00a0 Emotional intelligence consists of five components:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This aspect of EQ is concerned with your ability to recognize your emotions, especially \u201cin the moment\u201d so you can manage them.\u00a0 Self-confidence is an important part of self-awareness, too, since feeling certain of your capabilities helps you trust your own judgment and relate to others.\u00a0 You demonstrate high emotional intelligence when you think about how your feelings influence your thoughts and mood and consider your emotional strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Emotions can manifest in your mind without any effort on your part.\u00a0 However, you can control how you deal with them.\u00a0 Self-regulation involves how you manage your feelings, especially the negative ones, so they don\u2019t overwhelm you or cause you to act in ways you wouldn\u2019t otherwise.\u00a0 Mastering the skills that are part of self-regulation can give your emotional intelligence a boost:<\/p>
